Argument 10

10.  Claim:  Focusing gym classes on physical fitness and good health is a better solution than eliminating all junk food from schools.

Evidence:  A school district in Naperville, Illinois, that focused gym classes on teaching students physical fitness, health, and wellness instead of sports skills found that only three percent of its ninth graders were overweight.

Warrant: Some students surprisingly do not know how to eat healthy and others do but are really not aware of the danger it has for their future.  Some people find gym unncessary because they have not seen any progress in the way students eat and try to exercise their body.  By focusing in good health is better.

  1. Nice job Janeth! I agree with your warrant. You could also add that teaching kids how to eat junk food in moderation would also go a long way to fix the obesity epidemic.

  2. I do think it is important to inform students about how to lead healthy lifestyles, however I do not think gym is the place to do it. Honestly, very few people enjoy gym and actually focus in that class. You are basically graded completely on whether you changed your clothes or not so it really isn't necessary to pay attention. Naperville is known to be a very athletic district so it is probably the fact that many of their students are in sports that makes the percentage of overweight ninth graders so low, rather than the teaching of health in gym. In my opinion health class is what that is for. Because of these reasons I think it is very important to keep healthy options in school and take out the junk, because almost every student eats there at least once a day, five days a week, therefore school food is a substantial part of their diet.
